LIDAR Enclosure for Autonomous Shuttles
Veo is a design solution for a LIDAR camera system used for autonomous shuttles. Styling and functionality were crucial elements. Product life cycle refinement, as well as materials and manufacturing considerations were paramount to creating a successful design. Working alongside the client developing the LIDAR, we were given hard dimensions and requirements.

Design for Automotive Solutions. The project brief revolved around designing an enclosure for a LIDAR to aid navigation for autonomous shuttles. The design must provide a unique aesthetic approach for the automotive field, and implement sustainable initiatives and functionality. The LIDAR CAGR is projected at 22.7% during the 2019-26 forecast. Current solutions are clunky and imposing. LIDAR requirements. LIDAR camera with 180 by 90 field of view. Solutions through sketching. Ideas were sketched to aid the client in understanding the form and functionality of each design. Designs had to fulfill all the LIDAR requirements, and have the ability to be retrofitted onto any shuttle.  Image shows sketches developing the LIDAR enclosure.
Design detailing. Using SolidWorks, the final design was developed using surfacing techniques to model the LIDAR enclosure and components. The enclosure mounts onto a quadlock bracket. The LIDAR and heatsink are mounted on internal bosses. Image shows technical drawing and SOLIDWORKS process.
Features. The final design features a sleek aerodynamic form that has low wind resistance in any orientation. The curved lens provides a 180x90 FOV to ensure accuracy. The quadlock mount allows for easy maintenance, and the customizable bracket allows it to be retrofitted to any vehicle.  Aerodynamic form, custom bracket, 180 by 90 fov, lifted area for airflow. Materials and Manufacturing. Veo uses sustainable materials such as bamboo fibre reinforced ABS, which increases the life span of the product due to its resistance to the elements. Image shows exploded view listing the materials and manufacturing processes.
Product implementation. The customizable bracket allows Veo to mount in any orientation, on potentially any shuttle. Image shows front and side mounted VEO on a shuttle.
